Welcome to 2019, Nepal tech is growing faster and faster with the time. I still remember that time when there were no any mobile devices available in Nepal. The only electronic device I had seen was a 4-battery powered radio via which we listened Radio Nepal. Slowly the time passed and Nepal witnessed a Tech Evolution where it got Telephone, Android Phones, Telecom giants like NTC and Ncell, Fiber to Home Net companies and many more. Technology is a boon. Though it came late but finally Nepal was blessed with it. 

Today I will Share you some of the Tech Facts of Nepal. Not everyone knows it because not so many blogger or you-tuber has ever written about it. Lets begin. Its is going to be interesting.

1.First Computer In Nepal

 IBM 1401 was the first computer brought in Nepal. It was brought on for the population Census of 2028 BS. IBM 401 was a second generation mainframe computer. Its monthly rental price was $2500 USD which is Equivalent to Present $21000 USD. Thats about NPR 22 Lakhs per months. Too damn expensive.

2. Entry of Telephone In Nepal

Telephone was introduced in Nepal in 1913 AD. But the it was limited to the king and his relatives only. Telephone was banned for general public. Finally after 32 years, in 1955 AD it was made for general public by King Mahendra. But to get a telephone line during that time was very hard to get so only few hundred people were connected by it. In 1984, STD service was started so as to connect Nepal via Telecommunication. It was a big achievement then.


3. Arrival of Mobile Phones and Network.

After the invention of first mobile phone in 1973, it was evolving faster. The mobile phone craze was spreading like fire. Later in 1990s the Royal Family imported first few mobile phones from India and other some countries. In 1999 Nepal Telecom Corporation launched GSM for the first time in Nepal. But the usage was limited to Royal Family and high class people. Soon in 2000 Internet services was launched by Nepal telecom but it wasn't heard by public till 2005. The CDMA was  launched in 2005. This is where it was widely spread to public and Nepal was connected by telecommunication. Now they could also access Internet Services.

4. Introduction of 3G and 4G

Nepal Telecom introduced 3G in 2007 for the first time in Nepal and it introduced 4G for the first time in Kathmandu, Nepal in 2017. NTC is still expanding its 4G coverage in major cities. Currently 4G services are available in Kathmandu, Pokhara and other few major cities of Nepal. Thanks to telecom giants like NTC and Ncell, now 54% of Nepal population has internet access and more than 70% are connected by telecommunication

5. Internet Speed

The average internet speed of Nepal according to global index of broadband is 10.97 Mbps. And Nepal ranks 99th in the global index which is very poor. The internet speed should be improved and major isp like NTC, Ncell and Wordlink are trying to improve the net speed. Indian Youtubers had said in their videos that Nepal has one of the slowest internet in the world.

6. Tax Rate on Automobiles

The current tax rate on vehicle is 238% in Nepal. Nepal has one of the highest tax rate on vehicle import. Though, the tax rate on vehicle is very high, there are 30 Lakhs 8 thousand registered vehicles in Nepal. The tax rate was set high to collect money from rich people so that Nepal Government can construct better roads for them.



7. First Scientist of Nepal

First Scientist of Nepal Gehendra ShumsherGehendra Shumsher  born in 1928 BS was the first scientist of Nepal. He had made a double barrel gun called Bir-Gun(on the name of his father Bir Shumsher), another double barrel riffle called Ge-Riffle and a new model canon called Dhir-Gun. He had also made wind motors to draw underground water. And he was the first person to generate hydroelectricity in Nepal. He was the master planner behind Pharping Hydro power Project the first hydro power project of Nepal.

8. First TV Channel

Nepal Television is the first television channel of Nepal which started its broadcast in 2041 BS. Since then it has been the highest rated TV Channel. It broadcasts both Comedy Shows and News Shows. The news Show at 8 PM called Nepal Samachar is the one of highest TRP tv programme of Nepal. It has given best comedy tv shows like Meri Bassai, Jire Khursani, Tito Satye and other many more hit shows. No doubt its pure gold of Nepal in sector of TV Channel.


9.Discovery of Water on Mars

Lujendra Ojha from Nepal while working with NASA discovered the presence of moving water on Mars.
Ojha quickly became viral in Nepal after he discovered the water on Earth. He is 29 now and is still working along with NASA.




10. Electricity Production Capacity

Because Nepal has more than 6,000 perennial rivers, Nepal has capacity to generate 84,000 MW of electricity but Nepal has been able to generate just 753 MW electricity.  This shows how weak Nepal's infrastructure is. Nepal is trying to develop more electricity by introducing new hydro power projects.
